The In's and Out's of International Travel
As most people are aware the standard of living can vary greatly from place to place and so the expectations when you are traveling must change depending on where you visiting. When visiting an area in the Queensland like Brisbane, Port Douglas, Cairns,
Mooloolaba, Palm Cove, or Gold Coast you should be fine with the accommodations, however if you are traveling to a third world nation or some remote area, then it is important to know what they offer and these standards can vary greatly.
Air Conditioning – Although standard in many hotels around the globe, all hotels do not offer this as an option, as a matter of fact there are hotels that only offer ceiling fans, and depending on the location that you are visiting and the time of year, this could be a real issue, so be sure to ask.
Private Bathrooms – Another item taken for granted, but not always offered in hotels are private bathrooms. In nicer hotels, even shared bathrooms are usually kept nice, but if you have an issue with sharing, then be sure to ask.
Number of Beds – Many times the standard most people are used to is two beds, but there are actually hotels with more beds per room than this, so be careful when you do your inquiry to ask how many beds, and not does the room have two beds, because if you ask this and they have four beds, they will tell you no.
Television – Another item that is considered standard in hotels, in many countries this is considered a luxury item. Also, when you are inquiring as to whether they have TV, also be sure to inquire about cable. Many areas simply don’t get cable.
Telephones – Most hotels actually don’t offer phones in every room, but usually will offer a centralized phone for public use. Be careful, phone calls from these hotel phones can be very expensive, even when you are using a calling card.
Internet – If a hotel claims to have internet, be advised that they may mean just one computer in the office. And yes, it may very well be dial up.
Water – Although, probably safe to assume that if you have some of the luxuries listed above then the hotel you will be staying at should have hot water. Keep in mind that not all hotels offer hot water, and the water pressure can vary a lot depending on the time of day, number of guests and so forth.
Washcloths & Hangers – Not a very popular item at international hotels. Normally they will not supply washcloths and hangers, so this is something to keep in mind when traveling internationally.

Hotel Accommodations
Choosing the right accommodations for your stay, can in all honesty make
or break your holiday. It is important then to know what you are looking
for in a hotel or other forms of lodging, so that the accommodations
meet your needs with comfort and style and at an affordable price. After
a long day of sightseeing or visiting family and friends, it is nice to
return to a hotel that is both luxurious and clean.
Every traveler wants the best stay at the best price, but finding that perfect balance can be challenging. Since every traveler has things that are important to them, the following criteria for choosing a hotel has been created for you. The order in which you will determine this criteria important will be left up to you.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE SHOPPING FOR ACCOMODATIONS
- What is the absolute most important thing about these accommodations to you? Is it price or location?
- Will you be traveling with children? If you will, then you need to find a place that is kid friendly with lots to do and see. Kids cooped up in a hotel room for long periods may disrupt other guests, so be sure to find family accommodation.
- How much time will you be spending at the hotel? If it is just a place to sleep then you are looking for something that is affordable and clean. If you will be spending time in the room or on the premises, then be sure to find a place that offers a restaurant, pool, playground for the kids, and other things that will keep you entertained while you are there.
- What type of holiday are you planning? Are you looking for relaxation and beach vacation or an area where there is lots to do? Either way choose your location accordingly and be sure that your accommodations are central to the things that you want to do and see. Staying outside of this area may save you a few dollars, however you will pay for it when driving all around in an area that you are unfamiliar with. It pays to pay the few extra up front for the best location; this will make your holiday much more enjoyable.
LODGING CRITERIA
Now that you have gotten a better idea of what you are looking for and what will be important to you on this trip, now it is time to start prioritizing your lodging criteria.
PRICE It is important to most people to get the best deal on their hotel accommodations when on holiday. Money that can be saved on accommodations can be better spent on fun things to do and see. Most people make this their number one criteria, however it is wise to find accommodations that are rated on the star rating system, because then you may be able to find better accommodations in the same price range.
AMENITIES When considering accommodations it is important to know what amenities will be available. For instance, if you are traveling with older people and or children, then you may wish to consider a place that has a restaurant or pool on site. This can be not only a convenience in case of bad weather, but also a good way to fill time between other activities. Also some very helpful amenities include in room movies and video games, coffee makers, refrigerators and irons. These items can make your stay a little more enjoyable.
LOCATION Choose a location that suits your style and the people you will be traveling with. Active people will need a location that provides lots to see and do, where as if you are just looking for a place to kick back consider a small town setting for that relaxed atmosphere.
FAMILY FRIENDLINESS If you are traveling with kids, then you will want a place where kids can relax and be themselves. Parents will have a much better time on holiday, when they can allow the children to play without trying to keep them quiet and perfect the whole time. It needs to be relaxing for everyone in the family.
LOYALTY PROGRAMS AND FREQUENT FLIER MILES These can provide you with the best discounts and savings, and if you do a lot of traveling then programs based on points and rewards are a great way to get big discounts and even free hotel stay, car rental and much more.
